Class of 2027
Laura Gutierrez-Rivera, DO
Hometown: Tulare, CA
Undergraduate school: Fresno State University
Undergraduate major: Kinesiology- Exercise Science
Medical school:California Health Sciences University College of Medicine
Favorite thing about emergency medicine: I love the variety of patients, the ability to do procedures, and the fact that the coolest/nicest people work in the ER
Why Kaweah for residency: I was a scribe at Kaweah before medical school and watched all the residents become comfortable with high acuity/high volume of patients. I wanted to train somewhere that prepares me for anything, and that’s Kaweah. It helps that it’s home, too
Favorite day-off activities: Two ends of the spectrum: hiking/travel to beach or being lazy/binge-watching a series on Netflix/Hulu with good food and a drink
Previous life before medicine: I was a 3 sport-athlete and dreamed to compete in the olympics for track & field- clearly did not happen haha
Best place you’ve traveled: Cancun or Dominican Republic. I love warm water beaches!
Best meal you’ve eaten: My mom’s chicken taquitos. THE BEST
Favorite book: Hunger Game Series
If you could be a contestant on any game show (past or present), what would you choose? Deal or No Deal
Favorite movie: Mulan
Favorite quotes or words you live by: “You must not let anyone define your limits because of where you come from. Your only limit is your soul” -Gusteau, Ratatouille
Special interests within emergency medicine: Street Medicine, Ultrasound, Critical Care, EMS
Random fact about yourself: I’m right hand dominant, but lefty in golf and batting!
