Favorite thing about emergency medicine: EM is special in that you truly never know what is going to come through those doors. I love the unpredictability and controlled chaos of an emergency department, as well as the opportunity to “MacGyver ” creative solutions to unique problems. Also, no rounding.
Why Kaweah for residency:Â So many reasons! I had an amazing audition rotation. I got to do two thoracenteses, multiple LPs, saw cardiac pacing, pericardiocentesis, and more. The residents and attendings were incredibly kind, patient, and willing to teach. The location was great for me since I have ties to both the Bay Area and LA. I love that it’s a level III trauma center, so EM gets to see and stabilize all kinds of interesting traumas. For me, the socioeconomic class combined with fewer specialties immediately available for consult was a huge plus, since it puts the onus on the ER physician to learn how to handle a much broader array of problems. Finally, as cliche as it might sound, the single most important factor was the “fit” with the people and the gut feeling that this is where I belong.
Favorite day-off activities:Â Board games (Gloomhaven, Betrayal on the House of the Hill, etc), hiking/backpacking (Lake Tahoe, Yosemite), and video games (Elden Ring, Dark Souls).
Previous life before medicine: Kind of? I was an EMT for 5 years and ED Tech for 3 years prior to medical school.
Future goals and dreams:Â Global health and being an excellent emergency physician.
Favorite place you’ve traveled: Amazon rainforest for a wilderness survival training course
Favorite meal you’ve eaten: Omakase sushi from Jiro’s in Tokyo
Favorite book: The Dark Tower Series by Stephen King
If you could be a contestant on any game show (past or present), what would you choose:Â Naked and Afraid
Special interests within emergency medicine:Â Global health, wilderness medicine, EMS
Favorite quotes or words you live by: “People first.”
Random fact about yourself: I have a scar on my hand from a machete when a “friend” and I were slaughtering a goat in Africa.
