Hometown: Pembroke Pines, FL
Undergraduate school: University of Florida
Undergraduate major: Microbiology and Cell Science
Medical school:Â University of Central Florida
Favorite thing about emergency medicine: The variability of amazing things we get to do! I love seeing anything and everything that walks through the door or comes in on a stretcher. Emergency Medicine gives me the opportunity to grow in every direction, and keeps me on my toes. The practice of EM is exceedingly humbling. We get to tackle tough subjects of life and death. The emergency department is a magical place where we get to see people from all walks of life and catch people normally forgotten by a medical system. We have an opportunity to do so much good and get people connected to healthcare and social support who otherwise would have none.
Why Kaweah for residency:Â The people and the location! I always wanted to move out to California, and Visalia is so close to the mountains (a foreign concept coming from Florida). I meshed well with the residents and faculty on interview day/social events–I felt immediately accepted. Everyone here is so down to earth with such fun personalities. I wanted a strong mix of community, which Kaweah has. Plus, the opportunity to serve in such an underserved area was a large pull for me.
Favorite day-off activities:Â Playing guitar/drums. Working out. Tennis. Jiu Jitsu. Reading a good book. Listening to podcasts. Mostly I just do chores and laundry on my days off.
Previous life before medicine:Â I was a manager for a scribe company on my gap year between undergrad and med school.
Future goals and dreams:Â To be an excellent clinician and clinical educator who provides a positive impact/role model to my patients and students. I’d also like to continue improving in my side hobbies like music or Jiu Jitsu.
Best place you’ve traveled: San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. I have done medical work there for several years, which has led me to make lifelong friends and amazing memories
Best meal you’ve eaten: Difficult to say. Probably anything my significant other makes for me after a long shift. She’s a great cook!
Favorite book:Â It’s a tie between Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts and Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl
Favorite movie:Â Anything by Pixar. Probably Finding Nemo. I can quote most of that movie!
Favorite quotes or words you live by:Â “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take – Wayne Gretzky” – Michael Scott
Special interests within emergency medicine:Simulation and Medical Education! Ultrasound is also super interesting and fun.
Random fact about yourself: I taught English to kids around the world remotely during the pandemic.
