Favorite thing about emergency medicine: One of my favorite aspects is the ability of people in emergency medicine to come together in a critical situation and work together, supporting one another as a team- often without having had the opportunity to meet formally in advance. I first experienced this working in EMS.
Why Kaweah for residency: I had colleagues from my EMS career who progressed and ultimately graduated from the Kaweah EM residency who recommended I check it out. After having a rewarding sub-internship rotation and learning more about the Central Valley we thought it was the right fit for me and my family.
Favorite day-off activities: We are looking forward to exploring more of the nearby National Parks. Coming from the suburban environment of the Phoenix metro area and Southern California, it has been a change of scenery seeing so much agricultural land/activity. We have enjoyed going on random drives viewing the various orchards and livestock when not at home.
Previous life before medicine: I had a successful career in Emergency Medical Services, starting as an EMT in 2002 and progressing to becoming a paramedic, an EMS educator, and ultimately employment as a Flight Paramedic crew-member with a community based HEMS provider. After nearly 12 years as a paramedic I took the leap into Medical School and am now happy to be at Kaweah Delta training in the EM Residency.
Future goals and dreams: We plan on enjoying the years ahead raising our children, completing Residency training and after returning the favor as an educator once again.
Best place you’ve traveled: Alaska
Spirit Animal:Â Some sort of penguin-turtle hybrid
Favorite quotes or words to live by:Â 1. No matter how bad you think it is, it could always be worse. 2. I’m not superstitious, there are just certain things I don’t say or do.
Special interests within emergency medicine: I have become a fan of Ultrasound. It is something that at first can be intimidating but becomes more rewarding with practice and expanded skill set. As a previous educator, I am also interested in the use of simulation and scenario based training opportunities for healthcare providers both in and out-of-hospital.
Random fact about yourself: I throw frisbees left-handed even though I am right-handed for everything else.
