Medical Student Opportunities
Welcome to the Heart of California!
Our emergency medicine clerkship is a four-week elective for students interested in or planning to go into emergency medicine. During your rotation you will be able to experience our bustling level III Trauma Center serving the population of the Central California Valley. Our facility has a vast catchment area serving a population of approximately 500,000 people, with the closest Trauma Centers being approximately 50+miles away in Bakersfield and Fresno.

Each shift a student will be assigned to a team including a senior resident and attending faculty member. This allows for one on one guidance and close mentorship. Students will work with our Street Medicine team as an exposure to Social Emergency Medicine.
Â
Additionally, students will experience at least one simulation session led by our residents where they can hone their skills as future Emergency Physicians. Including but not limited to: central line placement, endotracheal intubation, lumbar punctures and more!Â
Kaweah Health also has multiple fellowships and additional projects that are available for student participation. Ultrasound fellows are readily available for teaching shifts if your interests are in point-of-care ultrasound. Our Simulation Center is open to all students (with supervision) who would like to participate in furthering their educational experience.
Â
For those students who are considering Emergency Medicine as a specialty, opportunities for additional mentorship for advising while on rotation are available.

Procedures are plentiful here at Kaweah Health. Most students in the past are given first attempts at Central Lines, Endotracheal Intubations, EFAST Exams, etc.
Our catchment area is large and as such most undifferentiated trauma patients are brought to Kaweah Health for assessment, intervention, and stabilization. We occasionally need to transfer to a Level I/II center for higher level of care and subspecialists after initial stabilization. On average, we have 15+ mixed, blunt and penetrating, trauma activations per day.
Clinical Shifts can be substituted for a dedicated Ultrasound shift or Street Medicine shift. Just let us know early so we can get you scheduled
A short drive takes you to the Sequoia National Park, home to many activities to include bouldering, whitewater rafting, hiking. After spending time in the great outdoors, spend time at one of the many craft breweries that are plentiful in downtown Visalia. Residents and faculty often hang out off shift enjoying the many activities around town.
California Living without California Prices! Visalia and the surrounding areas are extremely affordable compared to other metro California communities. A large number of residents are able to be homeowners due to affordable housing in the area.
