Make the Teaching "Stick"
Certain strategies can be used to increase the effectiveness of teaching. Some examples are listed below.
What & Why
A very effective way to make your teaching stick is to use the “What & Why” technique. “What & Why” is a simple teaching strategy that focuses on teaching the reasoning behind the answer, order, plan or approach you are trying to teach. Every time you ask the resident “what” they want to do, follow it up with asking them “why” they are choosing that answer.
“What & Why” is derived from Knowles, the father of adult learning theory. Knowles discovered that adult’s need to know why they must learn something before they will put energy into learning. So, without the “Why” adult learners will not pay attention to your teaching points and to them, they will appear like orders.
Another benefit of providing “Why” is because it allows the residents to improvise. It the resident understands the purpose behind the “what”, they can find creative ways to achieve your purpose when they encounter a barrier.
When it’s slow, make the resident tell you “What” the answer is AND “the Why” behind it.
When it’s crazy, you tell them “What” to do AND the “Why” behind it.
Storytelling
As teachers, one of the fundamental challenges we encounter is making our teaching material not only engaging but also memorable. I want to spotlight one of my favorite ways to make teaching more persuasive and more memorable. This is the technique of storytelling. “Storytelling is the most powerful tool for delivering information.” This phrase underscores the importance of a teaching method that may seem unconventional but is deeply rooted in human history. Long before formal educational systems, our ancestors used stories to pass down knowledge and shape behavior. Their wisdom is a testament to the effectiveness of narratives in capturing attention, enhancing memory, and driving understanding.
Treat your Diagnosis
Match your teaching to what you discovered during the “Diagnose the Learner” phase of teaching.
If your learner said they wanted to work on “ECG’s”, find a way to teach them about ECG during your time with them.
