Intellectual and Occupational Wellness
Intellectual Wellness
-
The first consideration is diversion from the day to day demands upon our intellectual abilities
-
Tool: Get a Degree
Get another degree
- I have a colleague who is completing a degree in philosophy, saddened that the process is ending (for now), and another who is fascinated by astrophysics. He takes the latest book on quantum mechanics with him on vacation! I prefer historical novels.
- Another physician friend is fascinated by Mayan culture and visits
archeological sites on his vacations. - Still another writes and records songs. These are but a few examples of replacing one kind of intellectual energy with another in order to relieve stress.
Occupational Wellness

Dr. Stanley’s Bucket Strategy
Dr. Stanley developed the bucket concept as a way to facilitate the knowledge, skill and attitude needed to be a great doctor. The concept incorporates all of the elements needed to survive and succeed as a physician in today’s world. The elements of this system are based on the six competency groups established by the ACGME. Dr. Stanley’s feels that each competency group can be represented by a bucket.
-
Bucket Principle # 1
These buckets are used to hold tools (tips, tricks, ideas, strategies) that can be used become and maintain competency in that area. A good physician will continuously add tools to each bucket and continuously learn new ways to use each tool.
-
Bucket Principle # 2
The value of these buckets is not limited to just a place to store tools, they also act as foundational pillars that are needed to hold up a doctor. Dr. Stanley likes to picture a wooden board across the buckets with him standing on top of the board.Â
Each bucket is equally important for holding up the doctor. If any bucket is removed, the doctor falls.Â
A doctor needs to pay attention to each bucket in order to survive and succeed. Only being an expert at medical knowledge and patient care is not enough for wellness. The sections below provide in depth information on each bucket and the tools that go in them.Â
